What is The Gottman Method?
Most couples therapy is built on theory. The Gottman Method is built on observation. Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. John Gottman studied thousands of couples in his research lab at the University of Washington, tracking their conversations, physiology, and relationship outcomes over decades. With Dr. Julie Gottman, he turned those findings into a structured clinical method.
The headline finding: after watching a couple discuss a disagreement, Gottman's team could predict divorce with over 90 percent accuracy. That number gets quoted for shock value, but its real significance is practical. If relationship failure is that predictable, the warning signs are specific, observable, and addressable. You can find them in your own relationship and change them.
Understanding How Relationships Work
The Sound Relationship House
The Gottman Method's central theory provides a conceptual model of relationship functioning: seven levels, held up by two walls.
Build Love Maps: knowing your partner's inner world, their stresses, hopes, and history, in current detail rather than from memory
Share Fondness and Admiration: expressing respect and appreciation out loud, which counteracts the buildup of contempt
Turn Toward Each Other: responding to the small, daily bids for attention and connection. Lasting couples turn toward these bids far more often than couples who separate
The Positive Perspective: the accumulated goodwill that determines whether a neutral comment gets read as neutral or as an attack
Manage Conflict: manage, not resolve. In the research, 69 percent of couples' problems are perpetual, rooted in personality and values. The goal is dialogue instead of gridlock
Make Life Dreams Come True: knowing what your partner wants from life and building room for it
Create Shared Meaning: the rituals, roles, and goals that make the two of you a culture, not just a household
The two walls holding all of it up: trust and commitment. When those crack, everything above them moves.
What Gottman research tells us about couples
Four conflict patterns are so strongly correlated with breakup and divorce, the Gottmans called them The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling. Each Horseman has a specific, teachable antidote.
Contempt is one of the strongest predictor sof divorce. Its presence in ordinary conversation (sarcasm, mockery, eye-rolling, etc.) tells you more about a relationship's trajectory than the frequency of fighting does.
The 5:1 ratio: in stable couples, positive interactions outnumber negative ones five to one during conflict. Not overall. During conflict. Lasting couples argue; they argue differently.
Repair attempts decide outcomes. The small de-escalating moves partners make mid-argument, and whether those moves get received, separate couples who recover from fights from couples whom fights erode.
What Gottman Method Therapy Looks Like.
It starts with assessment rather than open-ended talk. You'll each complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup, a detailed research-based questionnaire. In session, I take your relationship's history, observe how you discuss a live disagreement, and meet with each of you individually.
Then you get direct feedback: your relationship measured against the research, strengths and vulnerabilities named specifically, and a treatment plan matched to what the assessment found. Sessions from there are active and skills-based. You practice on real issues while I coach in the moment, and we check progress against the plan rather than drifting.
Is the Gottman Method right for you?
It fits most relationship problems and most kinds of couples: married or not, distressed or preparing for marriage, together two years or thirty. It especially suits people who want to understand why the work is what it is. Every intervention traces back to a specific research finding, and I'll show you the reasoning as we go.
It is not sufficient on its own where there is ongoing domestic violence, active untreated addiction, or severe unaddressed individual trauma. Those need their own treatment, sometimes first, sometimes in parallel, and I'll be direct with you about sequencing if any of them apply.
