Does this feel familiar?
You’re functioning fine. You just don't feel like a couple.
From the outside, your relationship may look successful. You manage careers, children, finances, and the demands of everyday life. But somewhere along the way, the friendship, affection, and closeness that once came naturally began to fade.
Conversations revolve around logistics. Evenings happen on separate screens. Physical affection has become infrequent, and sex may have become rare—or disappeared altogether. Rather than feeling like romantic partners, you feel more like roommates sharing responsibilities.
This quiet form of disconnection is one of the most common reasons couples seek therapy. The good news is that intimacy isn't something couples simply have or lose forever. It's something that can be intentionally rebuilt.
How Gottman Method Couples Therapy Can Help
Intimacy is about more than just sex.
Intimacy comes in different forms:
Emotional intimacy: Feeling known, understood, and emotionally safe.
Physical intimacy: Everyday affection such as hugs, holding hands, sitting close, kissing, and touch.
Sexual intimacy: A mutually satisfying sexual relationship that strengthens connection rather than creating pressure.
These forms of intimacy reinforce one another. Emotional closeness creates the foundation for physical affection, and physical affection often supports a healthy sexual relationship. Lasting intimacy usually begins by rebuilding friendship.
Why Intimacy Fades
Some of the most common reasons that couples grow apart:
Life gradually crowds out connection.
Unresolved conflict creates emotional distance.
Partners stop turning toward one another's bids for connection.
Stress, parenting, health changes, medications, and desire differences affect intimacy.
Avoidance becomes the pattern, making conversations about affection or sex increasingly difficult.
How intimacy counseling helps
We begin by understanding the pattern beneath the symptoms rather than assuming the problem is simply a lack of sex. Using a structured assessment informed by the Gottman Method, we'll identify what's keeping your relationship disconnected.
Together we'll strengthen your friendship, deepen emotional intimacy, create intentional rituals of connection, improve communication about affection and sex, navigate desire discrepancies without blame or pressure, and rebuild trust and emotional safety. When appropriate, I'll also recommend collaboration with a physician when medical or hormonal factors may be contributing.
Sex often improves as emotional safety, friendship, and affection return. Rather than forcing intimacy, we create the conditions where it can grow naturally.
Here’s what our work together can look like.
01. You feel like partners again.
Daily conversations become more meaningful, affection feels more natural, and your relationship begins to feel like more than simply managing responsibilities together.
02. Emotional closeness starts to return.
You'll learn how to better understand one another's inner world, respond to emotional needs, and rebuild the friendship that supports lasting intimacy.
03. Physical intimacy becomes more comfortable and connected.
Whether you're rebuilding affection, navigating differences in desire, or reconnecting sexually, you'll develop healthier ways to talk about intimacy without pressure, shame, or avoidance.
04. You create a relationship that stays connected.
Instead of waiting for intimacy to happen on its own, you'll develop intentional habits and rituals that help you maintain closeness through the inevitable demands of everyday life.

Yes. Most long-term couples experience periods where emotional or physical intimacy decreases because of work, parenting, stress, health changes, or unresolved conflict. The problem isn’t that intimacy fades occasionally—it’s when the distance becomes a new normal and neither partner knows how to reconnect. Couples counseling can help you understand why the disconnection developed and give you practical tools to rebuild closeness.

Yes. I work with couples across South Carolina through a secure video platform.
-
Often, yes. I’ve worked with many couples who felt more like roommates than romantic partners by the time they came to therapy. Rebuilding intimacy usually begins with restoring emotional connection, improving communication, and creating new patterns of interaction. While every relationship is different, years of distance do not automatically mean the relationship cannot improve.

I provide couples counseling that addresses emotional, physical, and sexual intimacy within the relationship. We can have direct, comfortable conversations about desire differences, physical affection, and sexual connection as part of couples therapy. If a concern requires specialized sex therapy beyond my scope of practice, I’ll discuss appropriate referrals while continuing to support the relationship itself.

Libido discrepancy is one of the most common issues couples face. The goal isn’t determining which partner is “right.” Instead, we’ll work to understand what’s contributing to the difference, reduce pressure and resentment, improve communication, and help you find solutions that respect both partners’ needs.
-
Yes—but at a pace that feels respectful and productive. After more than 25 years of working with couples, there’s very little I haven’t heard. I’ll guide these conversations professionally and without judgment so neither of you has to worry about saying the “right” thing.
